The universally accepted style for a news story is the
inverted pyramid style. In this, the most salient or interesting point is
highlighted in the lead and the rest of the story follows in the order of
diminishing value. It is directly opposite to fiction or story writing, which
discloses the prime story element only in the end. In a news story the punch or
the core of the story is given at the very beginning. It is contained in the
introduction which has to be crisp bringing out the essence of the news story.
The intro along with succeeding paragraphs; forms the body of the story. This
format is followed in every hard news story like an accident, a court judgment,
legislative proceedings, sports event or union election.
The main advantage of an inverted pyramid style is that,
even if a reader stops reading a story after one or two paragraphs, that he/she
will be able to understand the gist of the story.
