Difference between a Feature film and Short film

Feature film

A feature film is a film, also called a movie or motion picture, with a running time long enough to be considered the principal or sole film to fill a program. The notion of how long this should be has varied according to time and place. According to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, American Film Institute, and British Film Institute, a feature film runs for 40 minutes or longer, while the Screen Actors Guild states that it is 80 minutes or longer.

Short Film

A short film is any film not long enough to be considered a feature film. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences define a short film as "an original motion picture that has a running time of 40 minutes or less, including all credits". In the beginning, all films were short. The films screened by the Lumière brothers’ were of less than one minute duration. The length of film got extended as the industry began to grow.

But the biggest demand for short films has undoubtedly come from the internet. YouTube and Whats App have become some of the most popular viewing platforms for the short films online. The internet is also proving to be a popular alternative for short film-makers who can’t afford to distribute their films on DVD. Many of the campus films produced by schools and colleges belong to this category. Apart from the short film competitions and festivals, the internet has become the biggest platform for the exhibition of short films.

Difference between Advertisement and Public Relations

One of the most important and most often used tools that business concerns employ is advertising. It is used to convey messages to targeted audiences. Advertising can be extremely costly to employ. The process of conveying messages to an audience which may be composed of present or prospective customers through a single medium or multiple mediums is called a campaign.

On the other side the main role of public relations is to increase interest and awareness of the audience that you have targeted. This process or campaign as it is also called does not necessarily try to convince or persuade them to purchase the product. The public relations plan seeks to increase awareness and create a positive image of the company through messages that educate and provide information.

A combination of the two methods is generally regarded as most effective. A marketing strategy that is an incorporation of the two methods to produce the desired results would be the ideal process. Although advertising requires a bigger budget public relations is often considered to be the larger scale operation because advertising deals only with marketing and sales while public relations encompasses the total communications activity of the entire organisation.

Difference between Writing for Print and Broadcasting

Print journalism edits the writing more so than broadcasting. Newspapers edit for accuracy. Whereas, broadcast journalism airs what is written out exactly word for word. There is little or no editing involved with broadcasting. Print journalism involves more style in the writing, and broadcast journalism is sharper with the words in order to get the message across more quickly.

Broadcast journalism has the same concept as print where the most important information is placed at the top of the story. However, broadcast journalism doesn’t drag on with the story. It simply gets straight to the point, and it doesn’t leave the audience to question anything. Also, print journal has no control over how long it takes a reader to finish reading the story. But, a typical radio news story is 30 seconds long. Therefore, they both differ in length.

Broadcast and print media also differ in how much an audience remembers the information that is placed before them. For example, average newspaper readers remember more of the information than average broadcast viewers and listeners do. The reason for this is that the broadcast media can be turned off whenever and forgotten.

Objectives of an Article

Objectivity has long been a fundamental requirement for newspaper journalism. An article analyses, interprets and provide arguments for and against an idea. An article writer should have overall view of the topic and should provide examples to substantiate the points.

1.       To Inform
The main purpose of an article is to inform the responder of current news items as quickly, simply and objectively as possible without excluding relevant information and facts.

2.      To Interpret
Interpret various viewpoints of an event, issue or a recent trend.

3.      To Analyze
Analyze the current situation based on the background information, opinions and facts.

4.      Be Unbiased
Personal biases should not influence an article. The news article is reported fairly and accurately, uninfluenced by any person, political, social, financial organisation.

5.      Be Accurate
The material is accurate information and not opinion or speculation. The facts are having superior priority in an article.

How an Article differs from an Editorial

1. An article is a general word that is used for all news stories covering events, natural disasters, accidents, meets and discussions, etc.

2. Editorial is a special article that appears in a newspaper and carries the opinions of the editorial board on the issue discussed.

3. The editorial staff decides the events and issues that need opinions of the editorial staff.

4. An editorial is meant to persuade people to think along the lines of the newspaper. It is an attempt to influence the thinking of the people.

5. Editorial is opinionated whereas general articles are unbiased and free from subjectivity.49
