The importance of Letter to the Editor



Letter to the editor is a kind of feedback for the newspaper. It is a letter sent to a newspaper or a publication about issues of concern from its readers. In a letter to the editor, the reader expresses his opinion, suggestion or a grievance on a specific subject. Usually the letters are intended to be published.

Letter to the editor column is a part of the editorial page and acts as a medium of interaction with the readers. The input received from the readers is a good indicator of the popularity of the newspaper. Some of the letters also offer suggestions for improvement and constructive criticism of the published material which may help the editorial desk to take corrective measures keeping in view the likes and dislikes of the readers.

While writing a Letters to the Editor, it should be addressed to the Editor of the newspaper or publication. Writers should not waste time in introducing a subject but should go to the point. Ornamental language should be avoided. Simple and lucid language should be used so that the idea is conveyed in clear terms. Letters should be short and concise. Different ideas should be presented in different paragraphs.
